Overwatch Evolves: Meet Doctrine
Blizzard took the stage at BlizzCon 2026 to announce a series of transformative updates coming to Overwatch. The highlight of the reveal is the new vampire-themed Support hero, Doctrine, who is currently available in a limited-time trial. Doctrine will officially join the roster when Season 5 launches, bringing a unique set of abilities to the battlefield.
The hero utilizes a scepter, life-force draining abilities, and bat-like drones to support the team. Her backstory is deeply tied to the game's lore, as she is released from an Icelandic prison by Doomfist, kicking off the final chapter of the Overwatch storyline.
New Map and Sombra Rework
Season 5 also introduces a brand-new map, Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, set in Iceland. This environment promises new tactical challenges for players. In a surprising turn of events, Sombra is undergoing a major role shift, moving from the Damage category to Support. Roadhog is also receiving significant adjustments to ensure the meta remains fresh and competitive.
The season is set to kick off on October 6. Blizzard has promised to unveil more detailed plans for 2027 during the Overwatch Spotlight event scheduled for February. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, these updates signify a major shift in the core gameplay loop of one of the industry's most popular titles.
With the recent announcement that StarCraft is returning as an open-world shooter, Blizzard is clearly doubling down on its most iconic franchises.
